This maze can be solved normally, as shown here:
However, the letters along the path from top to bottom do not spell out a reasonable message. Reading from bottom to top gives the message WALLS RED HERRING. This suggests that solvers should make it through the maze without minding the walls. Drawing a single line from the start to the finish does not lead to any sort of answer, but observant solvers will notice the presence of numbers in the grid. Treating the puzzle as a connect-the-dots puzzle, starting at the entrance, hitting the numbers from one to eight in order, and finishing at the exit gives this:
There is a single letter along each line of the path. In order, these letters spell out the solution PARSIMONY.
*I am a big fan of Architect’s Daughter, the font I use in the puzzles on this site. However, it does have one downside – the letter I and the number 1 look identical in the font. Rather than changing the font for this puzzle, I opted to turn it into a feature and use a single character as both letter and number in this puzzle. Hopefully this decision didn’t throw anybody off the track for too long.
