- SHAME = ASH + ME
- KOAN = OAK + N
- LADDER = ALDER + D
- ECUADOR = CEDAR + OU
- SAMPLE = MAPLE + S
These extra letters, in order of the pictures, spell out TREEMENDOUS*, the answer to this metapuzzle.
*The ME from SHAME and the OU from ECUADOR could be EM or UO instead, but the other letters make it pretty clear what the answer must be.
