[Solution] Lost in Translation – 10 October 2022

This puzzle is about English words which have translations which are spelled the same as other English words. For example, CITY, when translated into Bosnian, is GRAD. The pictures (in alphabetical order when viewed counter-clockwise) represent both the original English words, as well as the international translations. The pairings are as follows:

  • CITY (English) -> GRAD (Bosnian)
  • OVEN (English) -> FOUR (French)
  • MAN (English) -> HOME (Catalan)
  • PEARLS (English) -> HELMET (Finnish)
  • LEAF (English) -> LIST (Slovak)
  • CHILDREN (English) -> BARN (Swedish)
  • POISON (English) -> GIFT (Norwegian)
  • SKIRT (English) -> ROCK (German)

Once the words are correctly paired up, the numbers tell which letter of the translated word to use. (The fourth letter of GRAD is D, so the solution starts with D.) Each line gives one letter to give the answer DUOLINGO, a well-known language-learning app.
