[Solution] Outsiders – 18 January 2021

Each line of this puzzle contains three words that fit a single category, and one other which doesn’t belong.

  1. Atlanta is a city, while California, Montana, and Texas are states.
  2. A salamander is the only amphibian. Crocodiles, lizards, and tortoises are reptiles.
  3. Erie, Michigan and Ontario are three of the Great Lakes, while Lake Havasu is in Arizona.
  4. Broccoli, carrots, and potatoes are all vegetables, but an orange is a fruit.
  5. Aquaman is a DC hero and Justice League member, while Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor are from Marvel’s Avengers.
  6. Bulbasaur, eevee, and pikachu are all Pokemon, while kuriboh comes from Yu-Gi-Oh!
  7. Brick is a shade of red, and forest, kelly, and pea are all greens.
  8. Aurora, Rapunzel, and Tiana are all Disney princesses, while Eugenie is a real-life princess.
  9. The Adriatic Sea is not one of the oceans, unlike the Indian, Pacific, and Southern.
  10. Bashful, Happy, and Sleepy are three of the seven dwarfs. Crabby is not.
  11. Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt are presidents featured on Mount Rushmore. Hamilton is no president at all.
  12. The Grinch, Horton the Elephant, and Yertle the Turtle are all Dr. Seuss characters, unlike Edna.
  13. Bert, Elmo, and Oscar have been regulars on Sesame Street for years. There is no muppet called Lolly.
  14. Ants, beetles, and grasshoppers are all insects, but millipedes have too many legs.

Taking the first letter of each outsider gives the phrase Ash, Oak, Beach, Elm. This is another set of four items with one which doesn’t belong. Ash, oak, and, elm are all trees, but a BEACH is the odd one out, and this puzzle’s answer. (There is a tree known as a beech, but it is not as common and spelled differently.)
