[Solution] Gridlocked! – 8 July 2024

This metapuzzle starts out as a Fill-In puzzle, with the seven feeder puzzle answers as missing entries. The words fit into the grid in exactly one way. It is easiest to start by placing the eleven and twelve letter entries into the grid, but there is no complicated logic in solving this one – there are always multiple places to place words without having to think more than one step ahead. The completed grid looks like this:

The highlighted squares in the completed grid, read from top to bottom, spell out OVERLAY GRIDS – PUZZLE TYPES DENOTE CORNERS. This tells what to do next. Solvers have likely already noticed at least some of the names of the puzzle types hidden in the grid. In fact, each of the seven puzzle types can be found in the grid, spaced out to fit exactly in the corners of a grid the same size as was used in the feeder puzzle of that type.

With the grids overlaid, finding the solution is a matter of finding the letters in the same locations as the gray “holes” in the grid. The answer is FAIR AND SQUARE.
